Review: Viña Vilano Crianza 2014 Ribera del Duero D.O.

This review is for Viña Vilano Crianza 2014 from the Ribera del Duero D.O.

Bodegas Viña Vilano is located in Pedrosa de Duero (Burgos), an area traditionally filled with high quality vineyards.

The winery is extensive, with over 300 hectares of vineyards, and was founded in 1957.

Ribera del Duero is within the autonomous community of Castile and León.

The wine is made from 100% Tinta del País grapes, a local clone of Tempranillo.

The grapes are hand harvested and sustainable, with a yield of 3,500kg per hectare. The legal maximum yield under DO regulations are 7,000kg per hectare. The soild is a mix of sandy, clay and limestone. The vineyards sit at an altitude of 800 meters.

The grapes underwent fermentation at 28ºC with 14 days of maceration.

The wine aged 14 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels, with a further 6 months in the bottle.

The wine has an alcohol content of 14.5%.

The wine pours a brickish garnet color in appearance, reflecting notable aging.

On the nose, the wine presents notes of raspberry, red currant, baking spices, marjoram, and vanilla.

On the palate, ripe raspberry, strawberry jam, leather, and cocoa come through.

The round body of the wine is balanced by fresh acidity and moderate tannins.

This wine is wonderfully balanced and an outstanding deal if you can get it for under $15.

Drink now instead of aging.

If you are pairing it with food, this would hold up well to roasted beef, lamb, and root vegetables.

Cheers!
