Review: Teuladí Negre Valencia D.O. 2022 from Bodegas Angosto

Here, I review the Teuladí Negre Valencia D.O. 2022 from Bodegas Angosto.

The Valencia D.O. is located west of Spain's third-largest city, Valencia, along the Mediterranean coast in the East-central part of the country. Within the D.O., there are 18,060 hectares under vine, at an average altitude 475 meters.

The D.O. requires that white wines have a maximum yield of 9,500 kg per hectare and a maximum yield of 8,000 kg per hectare for red wines. An official arrangement also allows Valencia D.O. bodegas to buy in wine from Utiel-Requena vineyards if necessary for a given vintage.

This wine comes from Bodegas Angosto, which has been part of winemaking in Valencia since 1905 and in the fourth generation in the wine sector. The winery owns vineyards in the D.O. covering more than 118 hectares.

The grapes for this wine come from Finca Santa Rosa in Ontinyent, Valencia.

The grapes are all indigenous Valencian grapes, made up of 54% Arcos, 24% Forcallat, 22% Bonicaire. The plantings and care for these vineyards are part of a varietal recovery project, carried out by the Valencian Department of Agriculture, which are part of a genetic study of Valencian vinifera, selection and classification of the material, with its subsequent multiplication.

The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 425 meters in albarizo soils, high in white chalk content. They are planted at an average of 2500 vines per hectare, with an average age of 7 years.

Manual harvest occurred in mid-October. Maceration occurred for 3-4 days at 5 ºC. The grapes underwent whole-bunch fermentation in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeast with light pumping over at 24-26 ºC. The wine was aged 2 months in bottle at is 14.7% alcohol.

The wine is bright Ruby in appearance.

On the nose, it immediately shows notes of ripe cherry, stewed red apple, rhubarb, cocoa powder, and black pepper.

On the palate, ripe cherry, rhubarb, and sweet basil shine through.

Overall this is a delicious, fresh wine. bright red fruit flavors are accompanied by fresh acidity, smooth tannins, and a lighter body. The wine presents in a very precise manner.

This would go well alongside paella or sobrassada.

Share this wine with loved ones outside on a warm, sunny day!

This wine is a Spanish Wine Review highly recommend!
