Review: Bodegas Luzón Colección Monastrell 2020 in Jumilla D.O.
This review is for the Bodegas Luzón Colección Monastrell from the 2020 vintage.
Bodegas Luzón is located in the Jumilla D.O. in southeastern Spain. The D.O. was created in 1996 and is one of the oldest in Spain. There are approximately 21,620 hectares of vineyards within the D.O., sitting at altitudes between 400 and 900 meters above sea level.
The region is located on a plain between the Castilian plateau and Mediterranean Sea, where it has a dry climate, hot summers, and cold winters. The region is also sunny, with more than 3000 hours of sunlight annually on average. The soils are largely composed of limestone-rich material.
Bodegas Luzón is located in the north of the Murcia province surrounded by mountains at more than 600 meters above sea level.
This wine is 100% Monastrell and all grapes were hand-harvested. Monastrell is late-ripening and thrives in drier, high temperature regions, making it perfectly suited to the Jumilla climate. The wine is deep purple in appearance, and presents notes of blueberry, blackberry, baking spice, rosemary, and thyme on the nose. Additional notes of vanilla and black pepper are accompanied on the palate. This wine is balanced, with medium body, soft tannins, and striking acidity.
Overall it is fresh and a good everyday wine to keep on hand.
Pair this with patatas bravas or pan con tomate/pa amb tomàquet!
